A little while back I got a fanart request for Basil Farrow, La Carmina’s adorable fuzzball. Since I have drawn basil a number of times from our Pirate business card (now an iPhone case!) to La Carmina’s blog, I felt a single illustration wouldn’t cut it. Duke Ellington’s Mount Harissa and Pokémon Trainer Battle by Junichi Masuda

I have no idea if Pokémon soundtrack composer Junichi Masuda was influenced by Duke Ellington or the song Mount Harissa from “Far East Suite.” Most of the song(s) melodies are quite unique from one another, but still, whenever I hear this:

On a somewhat related note I think the idea of a musical album as travelogue (such as the Far East Suite) is a great idea that all touring artists should play with.

This week’s Follow Friday features two artists who take uniquely illustrated approach to Graphic Design and UI, and Shmorky. Cause business cat says so.

David Lanham

I’ve been following David Lanham’s work since before Twitter, and I’ll never live down the fact that I missed his art show when it was in Portland. David creates icons, UI and game art with a rich, organic style. I especially like his "Somatic" icon set that turns app logos into monstrous, twisting creatures.

Brian Brasher

Back when location apps were new, I used Gowalla because it had the cleanest UI and these amazingly well designed splash graphics and badges. I used Gowalla because of Brian Brasher. Really, I’m just as happy to look at his art as I am to check in. Now you can too by following him on twitter. Bonus points for having a delightfully irrelevant profile.

Shmorky

Shmorky! I don’t know how I wound up following this cartoonist (probably Tumblr) but I’m glad I did. Shmorky’s drawing style is deceptively simple, portraying emotional depth (and humor) in comics like her series "Bloo." Also Business Cat. Go watch it now. Update: In researching Shmorky for this article I realized I’d read one of his web comics like a hojillion years ago.
